About KiddosNames
KiddosNames collects the official birth name rankings that thirteen countries publish each year and puts them side by side. It is free to use and there is nothing to sign up for.
It exists because this data is oddly hard to find in one place. Most naming sites run on votes, forum threads or private databases nobody can inspect. The numbers here come, unaltered, from the body that publishes them in each country: in eleven countries the national statistics office or the government agency that keeps the register, in Germany a language association that evaluates registry data, and in Canada three provincial registries. If a ranking looks strange, that is what the source published.
The site is paid for by advertising, and advertising has no influence on the rankings: no affiliate links behind name recommendations, no paid placements. Just the published figures, kept current and free to browse.
How the Data Pipeline Works
Every one of the thirteen countries is retrieved automatically, four times a year, straight from the body that publishes it. Most offer a machine-readable file or an open data API. A few needed more work: the Danish figures come from the same endpoint their own website calls, the Dutch ones from the Sociale Verzekeringsbank rather than the statistics office, and Canada has no national naming statistic at all, so the three largest provinces that publish open data are summed instead.
Whatever the route, the numbers stay as published. Nothing is estimated or filled in where an office left a gap, and a year is only shown once enough of the sources behind it have reported. Where a source gives two names the same rank, they are numbered one after the other, so that every list runs from 1 without gaps. A source that cannot be reached keeps its last verified figures instead of disappearing.
What we add is the meaning of each name and its language family: Germanic, Latin, Hebrew, Greek, Norse, Celtic, Slavic and a few smaller ones. Where a country has released several years, all of them are kept, which is what makes the year-on-year comparisons on each country page possible.
Each country page names its source and the year the figures refer to.
Each office releases a new year once a year, and they do so at different times. KiddosNames shows the most recent year available for each country, so that year can differ between countries.
Data Sources by Country
Every dataset comes from the body that publishes it, listed below. No third-party estimates, crowdsourced lists or commercial databases are used.
What Each Name Entry Includes
An entry is more than a position in a list. Each one carries the rank the name holds in that year's published figures, the root meaning of the name traced back to the language it came from, and the language family it belongs to. There is usually a short note on where the name originated and why it stayed in use. Below that sit up to six other countries where the same name ranks, with its position in each.
Name meanings follow the established scholarship on European given names, which is broadly settled for the great majority of the names in these rankings. Where the origin of a name is genuinely disputed, the entry says so rather than picking the prettiest version. Eleonora and Elvira are examples: both are usually given a confident meaning elsewhere, and neither has one that holds up.
A few names in the rankings carry no meaning at all, because none could be confirmed from a reliable source. Inventing one would be easy and dishonest. An empty field is the accurate answer, so that is what we show.
Cross-Country Name Trends
Putting thirteen rankings side by side shows which names travel across borders and which stay at home. The figures below refer to each country's most recent year: 2025, or 2024 for Spain, Italy and Canada. For the United Kingdom they cover England and Wales.
Names that rank almost everywhere
- Noah appears in all thirteen rankings and is in the top five in eleven of them. Only Italy and Spain place him lower.
- Emma is in the top five in Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Switzerland and the United States, and in the top ten in eleven countries.
- Olivia ranks in twelve countries and is in the top five in six: Canada, England and Wales, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United States.
- Sofia is in the top five in Canada, Denmark, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.
- Liam is in the top five in Canada, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States.
Names that stay at home
Every country also keeps names of its own. Italy has 58 names in its ranking that appear in none of the other twelve, among them Edoardo, Tommaso and Francesco. The Netherlands has 42, including Sem and Daan, and England and Wales have 40, including Freddie, Archie and Alfie. Each country page lists its own.
The rankings show where a name is used, not why, so this site does not guess at the causes. The trend section on the main page, visible when you select a country, shows the current number one and how long it has held that place, the names that are new in the top 10 compared with the year before, and the names that climbed the most places.

To be specific about what that means here: the rankings themselves are not generated. Every position on this site is downloaded from the source that published it, and the list of those sources is in the section above. Name meanings and descriptions are written and checked before they go live, and a name whose origin cannot be stated with confidence is left without one. The naming law pages link to the statute, ordinance or court decision behind every statement they make, so each one can be checked against the original. Nothing on this site is written by a model and published unseen.
